Game of Thrones, whisky, and Scottish history - safe to say I had fun with this one!
This past weekend I teamed up with @travelswithakilt
of the #Scotlanders
to put Diageo's #GoTSingleMalts
to the test. Each whisky is aligned with a noble faction of Westeros: Cardhu for the Targaryens, Royal Lochnagar for the Baratheons, Talisker for the Greyjoys, Lagavulin for the Lannisters, Dalwhinnie for the Starks, Oban for The Night's Watch, Clynelish for the Tyrells and Singleton Glen Ord for the Tullys. It was my job to conquer the Riverlands and the Reach, taking on the latter two.
Having literally written the book on #GameofThrones
and Scottish #history
, I was a bit skeptical about the house allocations. Why on earth would House Tyrell of Highgarden be represented by Clynelish, the northernmost distillery of the bunch? Well it turns out that Clynelish is Gaelic for 'Garden on the Hill', and just a few miles away is Dunrobin Castle, a 19th century confection of a castle that is Scotland's closest match to Highgarden. Fair play.
The whisky itself is slightly floral, fruity and smooth, an excellent fit for the decadent palettes of Highgarden, but its history is anything but sweet. Clynelish was established by the future Duke of Sutherland in 1819. The Duke and Duchess presided over some of the most brutal episodes of the Highland Clearances, and the distillery was simply another way to make a profit. He even had the locals build a massive monument to himself atop the highest hill - sounds more like a Bolton than a Tyrell to me.
Nearby you'll find some fascinating historic sites, including the 2,000 year-old Carn Liath #broch
, built by the people who inspired the Wildlings. Next up is Singleton Glen Ord, home of House Tully - who will win your allegiance?
