JORGE PERIS: Adam's Resurrection
May 2 – June 17
Jorge's project for sandwich began to take shape as early as 2017, when he first visited Combinat and downright fell in love with its mood and history. After many returns, each with its own discovery and leading to a stronger attachment, it is high time for a demonstration of love to be made public.
On this occasion, Sandwich – and the Chocolat extension particularly – becomes a new home for a back-from-the-dead pantograph reassembled by the Frankenstein-Peris scientist. Once the pride of Combinat and a highlight of engineering used for large-scale sculptures, this king-sized artists' tool has been, for decades, forgotten by all, left to rust and dust on shabby alleys, together with its history. It took an outsider's view to recognize its majesty and give it a dignified name: Adam, first man. It takes a dramatic remodeling of the exhibition space to do it justice – walls are displaced, roof is wide open.
As any resurrection process, this too involves a swarm of techniques and (non-)organic elements. Electrolysis, bones, car batteries, salt and a few hundred meters of cable being just a few. When all is set into place, we have nothing left to do than wait for that perfect lightning able to finally, and decisively, incite a whole new purpose-led life into this benumbed hero.
