One of my favorite things about DC is the history and all the little historic gems that are off the beaten path. In the 1950s, the US Capitol building’s exterior was essentially rebuilt. The original columns and stones were removed and replaced with marble. The old columns were eventually placed here, at the National Arboretum, surrounded by gardens and a reflecting pool. A Few Words on the Soul (Wislawa Szymborska) We have a soul at times. No one’s got it nonstop, for keeps. Day after day, year after year may pass without it. Sometimes it will settle for a while only in childhood’s fears and raptures. Sometimes only in astonishment that we are old. It rarely lends a hand in uphill tasks, like moving furniture, or lifting luggage, or going miles in shoes that pinch. It usually steps out whenever meat needs chopping or forms have to be filled. For every thousand conversations it participated in one, if even that, since it prefers silence. Just when our body goes from ache to pain, it slips off duty. It’s picky: it doesn’t like seeing us in crowds, our hustling for a dubious advantage and creaky machinations make it sick. Joy and sorrow aren’t two different feelings for it. It attends us only when the two are joined. We can count on it when we’re sure of nothing and curious about everything. Among the material objects it favours clocks with pendulums and mirrors, which keep on working even when no one is looking. It won’t say where it comes from or when it’s taking off again, though it’s clearly expecting such questions. Despite the chilly conditions, nearly 50 visitors joined Ranger Steve for the Fort Bunker Hill in War and Peace program on Saturday! Visitors embarked on a hike through Fort Bunker Hill Park, exploring the historic landscape of the once formidable seven-sided earthen redoubt turned Civilian Conservation Corps site in the 1930s, including an outdoor amphitheater and stone water fountains! The Civil War Defenses of Washington extends our thanks to Robert Malesky for his assistance with the program. Mr. Malesky's extraordinary research on Fort Bunker Hill and the Brookland neighborhood inspired much of the program. After spending the afternoon enjoying #rockcreekpark and trying to create art with my trusty cameras, I found this frame. A reflection of trees, ripples, and what I believe to be some kind of oil leak 🤔🤬? I noticed only down stream of this blotchy oil spots floating atop the water. Never have I noticed this before and I spend significant time enjoying the peace and tranquility of what is basically my backyard. Many creatures drink from this stream and I’m hoping this is resolved with haste. These days mothering is HARD. At Ben’s urging we went for a hike in Rock Creek. It was chilly and both kids have colds but we needed fresh air. The photos here show the good parts, before Ben got too cold, before I almost dropped Samantha in the hiking carrier while trying to get her on my back after stopping for a snack, before the 10-minute crying standoff I had with Ben when he refused to pick the dog’s leash off the ground after I dropped it (and couldn’t squat down with 27 pounds of baby in the pack). I feel like I’m good at communicating love and safety and caring and fun...but how do I do the hard stuff without feeling angry, anxious or frustrated? A uniquely quiet day, with an overcast sky, the feeling slightly heavy. All federal offices are closed for a national day of mourning that followed the death of President George H.W. Bush, the 41st president who died peacefully last Friday at the age of 94 at his home in Houston, Texas. A motorcade of over 30 vehicles moved past embassy row slowly on Massachusetts Avenue, crossing the bridge overlooking Rock Creek Park, just a few miles from the National Cathedral. It is an invitation only funeral for twelve hundred guests. The Cathedral has hosted state funerals for three other presidents: Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1969, Ronald Reagan in 2004, and Gerald Ford in 2007. President Woodrow Wilson is also buried there as the only U.S. President buried in Washington, D.C.
