How many more years do you really want to spend wishing you were leaner? How much time, energy, and self-worth is worth continuing down this path of in and out of another diet?
Listen, we all know it’s hard. If it was easy, no one would even want it. But this isn’t your job. It isn’t your soul. It is not your purpose. Losing weight is not all you are and your greatness does not depend on it.
Your goals matter and I know you desperately want to achieve them. If fat loss is your goal, that is great. It’s time to commit to it, see it through, and be done.
No more fad diets. No more yo-yo dieting. No more allowing dieting to monopolize your worth or suck all of your time. Get the basics down, repeat them daily, and question the validity any thought or feeling that makes you feel like you are less than for not being exactly where you think you should be. Remember, if the journey to get you to your goal feels like a full time job, it won’t stick. Over complicating a simple (but not easy) process is asking for trouble. You don’t have to cut out food groups, stay home on date night, and hide shamefully from holidays and celebrations due to food guilt.

Ya know, I really don’t post ‘selfies’... and today I caught myself wondering, why?
Is it because I have a sense of insecurity without make up, a filter, or being covered in expensive clothing? Is it because I strive not to identify with my physical appearance or to provoke that kind of attention anymore? Is it out of fear of what others think of me? Fear of vanity, judgement or expectations? Or is it a belief that a picture of my face or my body doesn’t add anything to mine or anyone else’s life? Maybe it’s a combination of all of these things.
But then I thought, do I want to allow these fears to dictate and limit what I do? Or how I perceive and feel about myself?
I did not choose the color of my eyes or skin, or the size/shape of my body... nor does anyone else. For most of my life, all I wanted was to change everything about me. I compared, obsessed, controlled. I attempted to ‘escape’ myself through alcohol, drugs, diets and diet pills, purging, relationships and sex, money and material things. You name it.
Today, I know I am more than a face or a body. But my body is a part of me and I choose to honor it and to love it. We all have the right to be proud of, and grateful for, how we are created and all that we are. We all deserve unconditional love and acceptance, especially from ourselves. Today, I know that I am a divine being in a perfect shell that is an outer expression of my inner reality. Today, I know that I am enough, I have always been and will always be enough.
So here’s to growth, self love, self acceptance, vulnerability, freedom and choice. And the courage to be “seen”, raw, for where and who I am right now. I took Little Medi-Tater up high in to the Andes in Peru, to Parque de la papa (Potato Park!). Here there are 6 local mountain communities working as a cooperative to grow, tend & protect the integrity of the potato, 800 varieties!!

I have had clients who are also anxious that therapy & looking back at their story, may be overwhelming, & are then relieved when the reality is that listening to their story & making sense of it, actually empowers them to recognise how wounded they have been by life, and to take steps to protect & care for themselves.

I used to be a huge flake...

Why?
I said YES to everyone.
I would overextend myself to please everyone.
I would overbook myself.
Or I would be so unorganized and not put things into my calendar and then be a no show.
I was scared to hurt peoples feelings.
I was scared to reject them (so I would ghost)
But what happened instead?
I would piss people off!!!
I was creating the exact response I didn’t want!!

Guys...
💥 IT IS OKAY TO SAY NO💥
Stop overcommitting.
Stop ghosting people.
Stop people pleasing.
BE REAL.
Your friends and clients will probably still be in relation with you even if you aren’t always available to them.
Often times, they respect you more!
You’re allowed to value your time.
Someone has a quick questions while your in the middle of something at work?
“I’m not available right now but I will be in 25 minutes”
Give people a context of time.
Never say “I’ll call you later”
Give a specific time and commit to it.
Don’t stop everything and throw off your focus and productivity for what appears to be urgent.
Not everything is urgent.

Most importantly...own your self worth and BE COMMITTED TO YOUR WORD.
Our word is everything.
Even if it’s calling someone back!!!
Find the time instead of procrastinating long enough to forget.
If you’re saying yes and can’t follow through it’s like confidence sabotage.
I promise you’ll feel like shit if you say yes to someone and can’t actually follow through.
Eventually people won’t depend on you, won’t buy from you, won’t want to work with you.
Seriously!!!
We all have that flake of a friend or co-worker. We love them.
But we don’t rely on them.

With ADHD come struggles with working memory. I've forgotten what I was forgetting many times!
Working memory is like the sticky notes of the brain or the RAM in a computer: it's information that we need to hold in mind in the moment and make scribble notes with until we figure out if we want to keep it and file it in our knowledge vault.
Here are my Top Tips to help with working memory challenges:
1. Expand Your Brain
If working memory is the sticky note of the brain, then expand your brain with actual notes! Use ONE book for everything. Planning, ideas, lists, journaling, tracking, scheduling... EVERYTHING. Get a size that you can take that book with you everywhere. Give it a permanent home in your purse or pocket and treat it as if it were as important as your phone. If you want to remember something, anything, write it down in that book. It doesn't have to be some fancy bullet journal spread or look perfect, but you can make it fun to use with stickers or a cool pen. It's been shown that writing things down actually improves working memory, and the more you use it, the more you'll remember to use it.
2. Develop a Photographic Memory
In a situation where you don't have a pen or your book? Take a picture of the thing (if you can) and type a note with the photo. With your smartphone you have instant access to a camera at all times, and most will let you add notes to photos so why not use it? Create an album of Things to Remember and build it into your evening/morning routine to transfer what's in the album into your brain expander book. Or keep on your phone as a separate photo album for a 'memory backup' and clean it out when you clean out your phone.
3. Dump Multitasking - Focus on One Thing at a Time Only
If you're lost without your to-do list (a lot of us with ADHD love our lists), limit it to a max of 5 things a day, and don't even look at what's next until you've finished your first thing. That means not answering calls, texts, reading emails etc.... while you're working on the current list item. Take short breaks if you need, but stick with that item until it's done. The good news is this also helps with the eternal struggle of finishing stuff.

Society’s outlook on mental health has come an incredible distance in the last 50 years towards the destigmatisation of mental illnesses like depression. Yet, it is clear from this stat that there is so much more that needs to be done.
As a society we need to go beyond simply erasing the stigma. At Dyes and Demons we hope to help in a small way by giving young people a lighter access point for conversation.
How do you practice self care? •
Self care is a beautiful way to develop a more loving self relationship. Each time we sit down to journal, step onto our yoga mat or make our favourite cup of tea, we decide to love ourselves. •
Practicing self care is also a way to get to know ourselves and be curious about new things. We are all bio-individual and will find different ways that feel the best for our beautiful selves. •
There’s no wrong way to practice self care; as long as it gives you an opportunity to provide care and love for your body, mind and/or spirit. •
My favourite self care practices are stretching, dancing, daily chai teas and journalling. I’m a big fan of making sustainable, easy self care practices (for myself and my clients) so we can practice them regularly and long term. •
On that note, I’m going for a walk to declutter my mind and bring some loving movement to my body. •

There's a place where body image, serious health issue and societal expectations on health and beauty collide. Sometimes it is not a pretty place. Living with a serious health issue that changes how you feel about your body and how it even looks can be a hard place to be.⠀

That journey to fall back in love with ourselves and our bodies after a serious illness or injury or alongside a chronic illness has so many parts to it and can take time.⠀
⠀
For a time we may be angry with our bodies for betraying us. I see this a lot in cases of cancer and auto-immune conditions where people were leading healthy lives before the illness arrived. Or we are mourning the loss of a part of our bodies or how it functioned due to cancer, another illness, injury, or even a mistake made by doctors on the operating table. ⠀

How long and difficult or easy it is to learn to love our bodies again will also depend what our body image was like before the illness or injury happened. I write about two things which can help in a blog you can read via the link in my bio 👆As this is a huge topic, I only address a very small part of the relationships between body image, illness or injury and societal expectations. ⠀

Tonight is the Full Moon in Virgo... This is the biggest full moon of 2019 and it means big energy shifts for all of us. This is a beautiful time to really reflect and ask yourself what has been holding you back? The moon has an effect on all of us, whether we are aware of it or not - animals included! •Me, myself, I am currently in a season of growth and upward movement, as well as a season of gentle inward reflection. I am taking the time to appreciate the good in me, acknowledge my mistakes without harshly judging myself, and I’m making the intentional effort to mother myself.
•Changing my inner voice from “you’re worthless and can never become worthy” to “you are beautiful and blooming, stay inspired” is something I have to practice multiple times a day, every single day, but it is changing!
•Practicing self-compassion is helping me be more compassionate (or compassionate at all where I used to have none) in all aspects of my life and it is WAY more fun!

People think ‘practice makes progress’ is just for things like hobbies but it can apply to so much more in life.
For me when it comes to self improvement + self care, it’s easy to get frustrated when I slip into a less positive mindset, but I remind myself that I am a work in progress too.
Teaching myself to love who I am, to follow the values I believe in consistently, to live the life I want is something which will take regular practice if I want to get better at it.
If you’re also working on changing your patterns of negative thinking + improving your self acceptance, remember that you need to keep doing it consistently.
Sadly you can’t tell yourself you’re amazing once + expect your subconscious to accept it as gospel forever. What you can do is practice as regularly as possible, and one day - you will master it 💪
Progress.
What does it mean to arrive? Sometimes I feel like an imposter because I haven’t arrived yet. I find myself waiting for someone to find me out. Call me out for not being a real adult, for not being a real parent, for not having crossed the finish line. As if somehow I’m aiming at a destination that once I’ve arrived at I’ll finally know what I’m talking about.
Truth is, that’s total bull-shit. It’s a fallacy. There’s no such thing as arriving. There’s just a process of growing, learning, becoming, striving, failing, losing ground, trying again, regaining ground, succeeding, and learning some more. This is life. This the process. Just being human and the best I can.
So today I’m doing homework. Trying to finish this masters in counselling psychology. Will I be an expert therapist when I’m done? Nope. But I’ll have learned more. I won’t ever arrive. And I think that’s beautiful and hopeful.
Take heart. Trust the process. There is no standard of done. Just becoming. Sometime you’ll stumble and fall. But it’s not over there. Sometimes you’ll cross a landmark and celebrate. Just don’t give up. Keep becoming. You’re not alone. And no matter what stage you’re at you’ve got something beautiful to offer.

A poem from my memoir "Emerald Rising"... Far back to the beginning
of the union which created
my existence
I began my life
like any other.
I was a human being
with a body and a mind.
I used my mind to think
and my body to do,
and I grew.
I learned many things
as most humans do.
I learned to walk and talk,
to give and take;
to love and hate.
I learned to laugh, to cry
to question; ask why.
I've enjoyed good times,
endured bad,
been mad; been had.
I've used good judgment,
poor judgement,
been blamed,
and been gamed.
Till one day
caught in a downward
spiral
I lingered forlorn for long.
In dreaded despair
of
obtuse abuse
and
dark disease
unable to will away the ills,
I asked questions
and
begged for answers...
Who am I?!!
What the hell am I here for ?!!
A gentle voice within whispered,
"You are not just
the flesh and bone
of your existence.
You are not
the endless chatter
of your mind.
Your purpose is grand.
The existence of your suffering
has brought you to
the edge of the dawn.
Do not be afraid!
Zen has said
when the student is ready
the teacher will appear.
Your readiness is evident;
the time is near..."
Exercise has had its benefits for me. It has helped me find joy in my body’s abilities and create deep, lasting relationships. But it hasn’t always been this way. For years I clung to exercise as my lifeblood. I believed that it was *literally* the only way to feel good about myself. My exercise habits took over, invading my relationships and other interests. I had lost the intuition to know when to stop. .
With my background in nutrition, my mind calculated that exercise = health. I pushed back and rationalized that it was essential for well-being. But when I tried to control it, I could never set safe limits and had to be “intense” in order for it to “count” as exercise. .
Finally, I decided that the healthiest thing for me to do was to just stop. This was so hard for me. What was I supposed to do with my time?? I felt like I had virtually no interests and nothing that could give me peace (more like numbing) except for exercise. .
What I had to do was sit with those feelings. A lot of that time was sorrowful and resentful. But I decided I had to do something, so I tried to reframe my perspective. With practice, I rediscovered things I enjoyed doing, both that were and weren’t related to movement. I could enjoy movement that wasn’t intense but still allowed for me to care for my body, like walking and stretching. This detachment from exercise freed my brain space and I had the energy to do many things that actually made me happy.

Regardless of where your relationship is with exercise, you can find happiness in a variety of ways. Exercise can be one of them, but it doesn’t have to be the only one. And exercise covers much more than just running or biking or lifting. If you walked to class today, you’re doing something for your body and honestly that can be enough. AND you are still an amazing, unique, likable person even if you didn’t hit the gym. YOU are enough. 🧡

Inside our heads we often talk to ourselves in a way that we wouldn’t even talk to a stranger.

You look so fat today.
Nobody even likes you.
Who do you think you are?
You’re so stupid.

Imagine repetitively saying those things to a friend. How would it make them feel? They probably wouldn’t stick around for long.

Even the kindest people amongst us put up with a reel of self-critical thoughts towards ourselves every day. Yet we help others, build them up, say nice things. What I want to know is what would happen if you also started treating yourself in that way?
__
I’ve been carrying out some research into self-compassion and the benefits it can have for our well-being. I AM LOOKING FOR FIRST YEAR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS to take part in my study. It is super important to carry out this research within education in order to drive policies than can focus on helping students to build their self-compassion as opposed to focusing solely on self-esteem. Which would lead to a greater sense of well-being during those difficult months of transition into university life.

Some truths about me:
I try to practice compassion towards myself and others as often as I can
I love lifting weights. High intensity intrevel training is also pretty awesome. One of the most satisfying feelings is completing my workout and knowing that I gave it my all.
I am a health nut, feeding my body with healthy, nourishing food is very important to me.
I am also a foodie, I love to cook and try new recipes.
Nothing makes me happier than some fresh mango.
I enjoy spending time with myself and am not really a social creature.
I completed my yoga teacher training when I was 17 years old.
I try to meditate everyday. This is somethinig I am still working on.
My favourite type of meditation is yoga nidra.
I do not like change.
I live with anixiety, something that affects me regularly and I must actively work to manage.
I do not drink alcohol.
I cherish time spent with family and it is one of my highest values.
Being grateful is very important to me. Everyday I write down a long list of the things that I am thankful for. There is always something to be grateful for.
I am super into Ayurveda, the sister science of Yoga.
In school, I hated gym class, however I still loved moving my body and being active.
I live in activewear.
I love a strong, vigourous yoga practice, but what may actually benefit me more is a slower, softer practice like yin or restorative.
Summer is my favourite season, and during the cold months of winter that were seemingly neverending I have to remind myself that this too shall end and spring will eventually be on it’s way.
The fun, playful nature of children inspires me and I think that we can learn a lot from the way kids live thier lives and the perspecitve on life they have. Drinking a hot drink can help with our #productivity , as we slow down we can come up with solutions to our problem and become more creative without even trying so hard.

So of course tea bags would have to make their way into a self care kit. For parents of young children, pairing it with a good thermos and you feel like you revolutionise parenthood.

How many more years do you really want to spend wishing you were leaner? How much time, energy, and self-worth is worth continuing down this path of in and out of another diet? Listen, we all know it’s hard. If it was easy, no one would even want it. But this isn’t your job. It isn’t your soul. It is not your purpose. Losing weight is not all you are and your greatness does not depend on it. Your goals matter and I know you desperately want to achieve them. If fat loss is your goal, that is great. It’s time to commit to it, see it through, and be done. No more fad diets. No more yo-yo dieting. No more allowing dieting to monopolize your worth or suck all of your time. Get the basics down, repeat them daily, and question the validity any thought or feeling that makes you feel like you are less than for not being exactly where you think you should be. Remember, if the journey to get you to your goal feels like a full time job, it won’t stick. Over complicating a simple (but not easy) process is asking for trouble. Ya know, I really don’t post ‘selfies’... and today I caught myself wondering, why? Is it because I have a sense of insecurity without make up, a filter, or being covered in expensive clothing? Is it because I strive not to identify with my physical appearance or to provoke that kind of attention anymore? Is it out of fear of what others think of me? Fear of vanity, judgement or expectations? Or is it a belief that a picture of my face or my body doesn’t add anything to mine or anyone else’s life? Maybe it’s a combination of all of these things. But then I thought, do I want to allow these fears to dictate and limit what I do? Or how I perceive and feel about myself? I did not choose the color of my eyes or skin, or the size/shape of my body... nor does anyone else. For most of my life, all I wanted was to change everything about me. I compared, obsessed, controlled. I attempted to ‘escape’ myself through alcohol, drugs, diets and diet pills, purging, relationships and sex, money and material things. You name it. Today, I know I am more than a face or a body. But my body is a part of me and I choose to honor it and to love it. We all have the right to be proud of, and grateful for, how we are created and all that we are. We all deserve unconditional love and acceptance, especially from ourselves. Today, I know that I am a divine being in a perfect shell that is an outer expression of my inner reality. Today, I know that I am enough, I have always been and will always be enough. So here’s to growth, self love, self acceptance, vulnerability, freedom and choice. And the courage to be “seen”, raw, for where and who I am right now. I took Little Medi-Tater up high in to the Andes in Peru, to Parque de la papa (Potato Park!). Here there are 6 local mountain communities working as a cooperative to grow, tend & protect the integrity of the potato, 800 varieties!! ... Little Medi-Tater was feeling shy to begin with; unsure what would be revealed in connecting with their past. ... I have had clients who are also anxious that therapy & looking back at their story, may be overwhelming, & are then relieved when the reality is that listening to their story & making sense of it, actually empowers them to recognise how wounded they have been by life, and to take steps to protect & care for themselves. ... I used to be a huge flake... 😱❄️ Why? I said YES to everyone. I would overextend myself to please everyone. I would overbook myself. Or I would be so unorganized and not put things into my calendar and then be a no show. I was scared to hurt peoples feelings. I was scared to reject them (so I would ghost) But what happened instead? I would piss people off!!! I was creating the exact response I didn’t want!! • Guys... 💥 IT IS OKAY TO SAY NO💥 Stop overcommitting. Stop ghosting people. Stop people pleasing. BE REAL. Your friends and clients will probably still be in relation with you even if you aren’t always available to them. Often times, they respect you more! You’re allowed to value your time. Someone has a quick questions while your in the middle of something at work? “I’m not available right now but I will be in 25 minutes” Give people a context of time. Never say “I’ll call you later” Give a specific time and commit to it. Don’t stop everything and throw off your focus and productivity for what appears to be urgent. Not everything is urgent. • Most importantly...own your self worth and BE COMMITTED TO YOUR WORD. Our word is everything. Even if it’s calling someone back!!! Find the time instead of procrastinating long enough to forget. If you’re saying yes and can’t follow through it’s like confidence sabotage. I promise you’ll feel like shit if you say yes to someone and can’t actually follow through. Eventually people won’t depend on you, won’t buy from you, won’t want to work with you. Seriously!!! We all have that flake of a friend or co-worker. We love them. But we don’t rely on them. • Who do YOU want to be? Committed AF? Reliable? True to your word? Then start saying NO so you CAN say yes with 100% commitment. 💪🏼✨ This is Leadership!!! Your style!!! Can you depend on yourself???? What needs to change? With ADHD come struggles with working memory. I've forgotten what I was forgetting many times! Working memory is like the sticky notes of the brain or the RAM in a computer: it's information that we need to hold in mind in the moment and make scribble notes with until we figure out if we want to keep it and file it in our knowledge vault. Here are my Top Tips to help with working memory challenges: 1. Expand Your Brain If working memory is the sticky note of the brain, then expand your brain with actual notes! Use ONE book for everything. Planning, ideas, lists, journaling, tracking, scheduling... EVERYTHING. Get a size that you can take that book with you everywhere. Give it a permanent home in your purse or pocket and treat it as if it were as important as your phone. If you want to remember something, anything, write it down in that book. It doesn't have to be some fancy bullet journal spread or look perfect, but you can make it fun to use with stickers or a cool pen. It's been shown that writing things down actually improves working memory, and the more you use it, the more you'll remember to use it. 2. Develop a Photographic Memory In a situation where you don't have a pen or your book? Take a picture of the thing (if you can) and type a note with the photo. With your smartphone you have instant access to a camera at all times, and most will let you add notes to photos so why not use it? Create an album of Things to Remember and build it into your evening/morning routine to transfer what's in the album into your brain expander book. Or keep on your phone as a separate photo album for a 'memory backup' and clean it out when you clean out your phone. 3. Dump Multitasking - Focus on One Thing at a Time Only If you're lost without your to-do list (a lot of us with ADHD love our lists), limit it to a max of 5 things a day, and don't even look at what's next until you've finished your first thing. That means not answering calls, texts, reading emails etc.... while you're working on the current list item. Take short breaks if you need, but stick with that item until it's done. The good news is this also helps with the eternal struggle of finishing stuff.

How do you practice self care? • Self care is a beautiful way to develop a more loving self relationship. Each time we sit down to journal, step onto our yoga mat or make our favourite cup of tea, we decide to love ourselves. • Practicing self care is also a way to get to know ourselves and be curious about new things. We are all bio-individual and will find different ways that feel the best for our beautiful selves. • There’s no wrong way to practice self care; as long as it gives you an opportunity to provide care and love for your body, mind and/or spirit. • My favourite self care practices are stretching, dancing, daily chai teas and journalling. I’m a big fan of making sustainable, easy self care practices (for myself and my clients) so we can practice them regularly and long term. • On that note, I’m going for a walk to declutter my mind and bring some loving movement to my body. • What’s your favourite self care practice? 👇

There's a place where body image, serious health issue and societal expectations on health and beauty collide. Sometimes it is not a pretty place. Living with a serious health issue that changes how you feel about your body and how it even looks can be a hard place to be.⠀ ⠀ That journey to fall back in love with ourselves and our bodies after a serious illness or injury or alongside a chronic illness has so many parts to it and can take time.⠀ ⠀ For a time we may be angry with our bodies for betraying us. I see this a lot in cases of cancer and auto-immune conditions where people were leading healthy lives before the illness arrived. Or we are mourning the loss of a part of our bodies or how it functioned due to cancer, another illness, injury, or even a mistake made by doctors on the operating table. ⠀ ⠀ How long and difficult or easy it is to learn to love our bodies again will also depend what our body image was like before the illness or injury happened. ~CURIOSITY~ I would say one of the most impactful ways you can navigate through a period of stuckness is to be curious. Think of yourself as the detective of your life, your relationships, friendships, family life, social life, career, or other areas where you feel stuck! Look for clues that help connect the dots and help you see the bigger picture. Ask yourself: What am I noticing about myself in this situation? Which previous experiences are affecting my current reactions? What am I doing over and over again that is giving me the same results? Is there another way to look at this situation that I haven’t considered? If I were a stranger, what would I think is going on? What advice would I give someone else in this situation, and might that advice apply to me? If (xyz) was different, what would I be doing differently? Being curious is a non-committal and non-judgmental way to get you thinking about your stuckness. Being curious is not about “needing” to change or switch things up, but about dipping your toes into possibility. I don’t want anyone to think that my story means hope doesn’t exist. I’m sure it does... because once upon a time it did, and I’m sure it would if my story was a little different. Different in that I didn’t let myself get to a point where hope was misinterpreted and unwelcomed. I’ve spent hours and hours, probably days worth, reflecting on a comprehensible definition and examples of hope... I believe I shared my insights as a post a while back. Part of my musings and learning identified that sometimes good comes from suffering and painful perseverance; hope is a means and an end... it’s in the process and a goal. But everything feels too painful, and I’m just getting more and more run down. People think ‘practice makes progress’ is just for things like hobbies but it can apply to so much more in life. For me when it comes to self improvement + self care, it’s easy to get frustrated when I slip into a less positive mindset, but I remind myself that I am a work in progress too. Teaching myself to love who I am, to follow the values I believe in consistently, to live the life I want is something which will take regular practice if I want to get better at it. If you’re also working on changing your patterns of negative thinking + improving your self acceptance, remember that you need to keep doing it consistently. Sadly you can’t tell yourself you’re amazing once + expect your subconscious to accept it as gospel forever. What you can do is practice as regularly as possible, and one day - you will master it 💪

Progress. What does it mean to arrive? Sometimes I feel like an imposter because I haven’t arrived yet. I find myself waiting for someone to find me out. Call me out for not being a real adult, for not being a real parent, for not having crossed the finish line. As if somehow I’m aiming at a destination that once I’ve arrived at I’ll finally know what I’m talking about. Truth is, that’s total bull-shit. It’s a fallacy. There’s no such thing as arriving. There’s just a process of growing, learning, becoming, striving, failing, losing ground, trying again, regaining ground, succeeding, and learning some more. This is life. This the process. Just being human and the best I can. So today I’m doing homework. Trying to finish this masters in counselling psychology. Will I be an expert therapist when I’m done? Nope. But I’ll have learned more. I won’t ever arrive. And I think that’s beautiful and hopeful. Take heart. Trust the process. There is no standard of done. Just becoming. Sometime you’ll stumble and fall. But it’s not over there. Sometimes you’ll cross a landmark and celebrate. Just don’t give up. Keep becoming. You’re not alone. A poem from my memoir "Emerald Rising"... Far back to the beginning of the union which created my existence I began my life like any other. I was a human being with a body and a mind. I used my mind to think and my body to do, and I grew. I learned many things as most humans do. I learned to walk and talk, to give and take; to love and hate. I learned to laugh, to cry to question; ask why. I've enjoyed good times, endured bad, been mad; been had. I've used good judgment, poor judgement, been blamed, and been gamed. Till one day caught in a downward spiral I lingered forlorn for long. In dreaded despair of obtuse abuse and dark disease unable to will away the ills, I asked questions and begged for answers... Who am I?!! What the hell am I here for ?!! A gentle voice within whispered, "You are not just the flesh and bone of your existence. You are not the endless chatter of your mind. Your purpose is grand. The existence of your suffering has brought you to the edge of the dawn. Do not be afraid! Zen has said when the student is ready the teacher will appear. Exercise has had its benefits for me. It has helped me find joy in my body’s abilities and create deep, lasting relationships. But it hasn’t always been this way. For years I clung to exercise as my lifeblood. I believed that it was *literally* the only way to feel good about myself. My exercise habits took over, invading my relationships and other interests. I had lost the intuition to know when to stop. . With my background in nutrition, my mind calculated that exercise = health. I pushed back and rationalized that it was essential for well-being. But when I tried to control it, I could never set safe limits and had to be “intense” in order for it to “count” as exercise. . Finally, I decided that the healthiest thing for me to do was to just stop. This was so hard for me. What was I supposed to do with my time?? I felt like I had virtually no interests and nothing that could give me peace (more like numbing) except for exercise. . What I had to do was sit with those feelings. A lot of that time was sorrowful and resentful. But I decided I had to do something, so I tried to reframe my perspective. With practice, I rediscovered things I enjoyed doing, both that were and weren’t related to movement. I could enjoy movement that wasn’t intense but still allowed for me to care for my body, like walking and stretching. This detachment from exercise freed my brain space and I had the energy to do many things that actually made me happy. . Regardless of where your relationship is with exercise, you can find happiness in a variety of ways. Exercise can be one of them, but it doesn’t have to be the only one. And exercise covers much more than just running or biking or lifting. If you walked to class today, you’re doing something for your body and honestly that can be enough. AND you are still an amazing, unique, likable person even if you didn’t hit the gym. SELF-COMPASSION __ Inside our heads we often talk to ourselves in a way that we wouldn’t even talk to a stranger. __ You look so fat today. Nobody even likes you. Who do you think you are? You’re so stupid. __ Imagine repetitively saying those things to a friend. How would it make them feel? They probably wouldn’t stick around for long. __ Even the kindest people amongst us put up with a reel of self-critical thoughts towards ourselves every day. Yet we help others, build them up, say nice things. What I want to know is what would happen if you also started treating yourself in that way? __ I’ve been carrying out some research into self-compassion and the benefits it can have for our well-being. I AM LOOKING FOR FIRST YEAR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS to take part in my study. It is super important to carry out this research within education in order to drive policies than can focus on helping students to build their self-compassion as opposed to focusing solely on self-esteem. Which would lead to a greater sense of well-being during those difficult months of transition into university life. __ If you are a first year student from any university I would greatly appreciate you filling out a few questionnaires about your experiences. Some truths about me: I try to practice compassion towards myself and others as often as I can I love lifting weights. High intensity intrevel training is also pretty awesome. One of the most satisfying feelings is completing my workout and knowing that I gave it my all. I am a health nut, feeding my body with healthy, nourishing food is very important to me. I am also a foodie, I love to cook and try new recipes. Nothing makes me happier than some fresh mango. I enjoy spending time with myself and am not really a social creature. I completed my yoga teacher training when I was 17 years old. I try to meditate everyday. This is somethinig I am still working on. My favourite type of meditation is yoga nidra. I do not like change. I live with anixiety, something that affects me regularly and I must actively work to manage. I do not drink alcohol. I cherish time spent with family and it is one of my highest values. Being grateful is very important to me. Everyday I write down a long list of the things that I am thankful for. There is always something to be grateful for. I am super into Ayurveda, the sister science of Yoga. In school, I hated gym class, however I still loved moving my body and being active. I live in activewear. I love a strong, vigourous yoga practice, but what may actually benefit me more is a slower, softer practice like yin or restorative. Summer is my favourite season, and during the cold months of winter that were seemingly neverending I have to remind myself that this too shall end and spring will eventually be on it’s way. The fun, playful nature of children inspires me and I think that we can learn a lot from the way kids live thier lives and the perspecitve on life they have. Drinking a hot drink can help with our #productivity , as we slow down we can come up with solutions to our problem and become more creative without even trying so hard. . So of course tea bags would have to make their way into a self care kit. For parents of young children, pairing it with a good thermos and you feel like you revolutionise parenthood. . Pssst.
